An Ethnic and Linguistic Melting Pot.
Akoko-Edo Local Government Area located in Edo State, is one of the oldest and largest unadultrated local governments in Nigeria,
β
βIt is primarily composed of four major indigenous tribes, the Okpameri, Etuno (Igarra), Uneme, and Ososo.
-
Okpameri: The largest and most widespread tribe in Akoko-Edo. They comprise a highly strategic socio-political stronghold. The Okpameri name translates to "we are one"—a unified identity forged in the 19th century to resist Nupe slave raiding. The Okpameri people are an Edoid group primarily inhabiting areas around Ibillo, Somorika, Ojah, and Imoga.
-
Etuno (Igarra): Centered in Igarra, the administrative headquarters of Akoko-Edo. They trace their origins to the ancient Benin Kingdom and speak the Etuno language, which is closely related to Ebira.
-
Uneme: Found in communities like Uneme-Nekhua, Uneme-Akiosu, and Uneme-Ekpedo. Historically renowned across the region as skilled blacksmiths and metalworkers.
-
Ososo: Predominantly located in the mountainous, scenic town of Ososo. They are known for their distinct culture and the annual Itakpe festival. β
